Teker Bazar Decked With Hundreds of Flags

A small rural marketplace in Noakhali has been transformed by a colourful display of more than 300 football flags as local supporters prepare to celebrate the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The scene can be found at Teker Bazar in Char Kakra Union of Companiganj Upazila, approximately 25 kilometres from Maijdee, the district headquarters of Noakhali. Although the market contains only around 70 shops, it has become a striking attraction due to the large number of flags installed by local supporters of Brazil and Argentina.

During a visit to the market on Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of Argentine and Brazilian flags could be seen hanging from ropes stretched across the marketplace. The flags have been placed in front of shops, attached to electricity poles, hung from tree branches, and displayed on the roofs of buildings. The sky-blue and white colours of Argentina, alongside the yellow and blue associated with Brazil, have given the entire area a festive appearance.

The display is visible from nearly one kilometre away, drawing the attention of shoppers, passers-by and visitors from neighbouring areas. Many people stop to admire the decorations, while others take photographs and record videos using their mobile phones.

According to local residents, Teker Bazar experiences a surge of football enthusiasm whenever a World Cup tournament approaches. However, they say this year’s preparations are more extensive than in previous editions. Local young people and business owners have jointly financed the installation of more than 300 flags throughout the market, with the aim of sharing the excitement of the tournament with the wider community.

He explained that displaying the flag of his favourite team is a way of expressing excitement ahead of the tournament, adding that staying awake late to watch matches never feels tiring for devoted supporters.

Businessman Alomgir Hossain noted that both Argentina and Brazil enjoy strong support in the area. He said that a friendly and unspoken competition has developed between supporters of the two nations regarding the number of flags displayed. However, he emphasised that the rivalry is purely for enjoyment and has never led to disputes within the community.

Retired teacher Samsul Haque observed that while Argentina and Brazil may be fierce rivals on the football pitch, supporters of both teams in Teker Bazar celebrate together in a spirit of harmony. He said the rows of flags flying side by side symbolise community unity and mutual respect. He also expressed the hope that the excitement surrounding the World Cup would remain centred on enjoyment and entertainment.
