Sonargaon, Jahangirnagar and BRAC Triumph in Ispahani–Prothom Alo Inter-University Football

The 3rd Ispahani–Prothom Alo Inter-University Football Tournament kicked off today with electrifying encounters that set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested competition. Sonargaon University, Jahangirnagar University, and BRAC University emerged victorious in their opening matches, while Bangladesh University of Business and Technology, University of Scholars, and East West University were eliminated after disappointing starts.

The matches, held at the Daffodil International University ground in Birulia, Savar, delivered dramatic moments, with two of the three fixtures requiring penalty shootouts to determine the winners. Fans were treated to an intense display of skill, resilience, and competitive spirit.

The final match of the day saw BRAC University face East West University in a tightly contested encounter. Neither team could break the deadlock during regular play, leaving the score at 0–0 after 70 minutes. BRAC University ultimately triumphed 4–2 in the penalty shootout, thanks in part to the outstanding performance of Rwandan striker Thierry Simiumukiza. Midfielder and vice-captain Wasi Itmam Anjum was named Player of the Match for his creative play and leadership on the field.

Jahangirnagar University secured a confident 3–1 win over the University of Scholars despite missing key player Mahmudul Hasan Kiran. The highlight of the game was a lightning-fast goal by Wadud Ahmed Sizan, scored just 17 seconds after kick-off, marking the fastest goal of the tournament so far.

Sonargaon University and Bangladesh University of Business and Technology also battled to a 1–1 draw, with the match ultimately decided through penalties. Goalkeeper Joy Chakraborty proved decisive, saving two critical shots to guide Sonargaon University to a 4–2 victory in the tiebreaker.

Former national football captain Zahid Hasan Emily, along with senior officials from Ispahani Tea Limited, presented awards to the outstanding performers of the day. Emily praised the competitiveness of the matches, stating, “All games were highly competitive. Initiatives like this are vital for the promotion of university-level football in Bangladesh.”
