State farewell given to Asha Bhosle at Shivaji Park

Veteran Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died in Mumbai at the age of 92, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than seven decades and left a lasting imprint on Indian film music. Her death has been followed by official arrangements for a state funeral and widespread tributes from the entertainment industry.

Hospital sources confirmed that she died on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She had been admitted after falling ill the previous night. Medical officials stated that she was suffering from age-related complications along with an infection. Her condition worsened due to multiple organ failure, which was recorded as the cause of death.

After her death was confirmed, her mortal remains were moved on Sunday evening to her residence in Lower Parel, Mumbai. The family arranged for her body to be kept at the residence for public viewing and last respects. Her son, Anand Bhosle, informed that admirers could visit the residence from 11:00 a.m. to pay tribute.

The family further confirmed that the formal public viewing would take place between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Monday, followed by the final rites at 4:00 p.m. at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. The ceremony is scheduled to be conducted with full state honours. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to attend the funeral proceedings. The same cremation ground had earlier been used for the last rites of her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar.

Asha Bhosle’s musical career extended over more than 70 years. She is credited with recording over 12,000 songs in more than 20 languages. Her repertoire covered a wide range of genres, including classical compositions, ghazals, devotional music, and mainstream film songs. She was widely recognised for her adaptability across musical styles and linguistic diversity, which contributed to her prominence in Indian playback singing.

During her lifetime, she received several major national honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Vibhushan, and multiple National Film Awards. These awards reflected her sustained contribution to the Indian cultural and cinematic landscape.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee stated that he grew up listening to her songs, describing her voice as a major influence. Actor Ram Charan referred to her passing as an irreparable loss to Indian music, while describing her vocal quality as extraordinary.

Several prominent figures, including lyricist Javed Akhtar, actress Shabana Azmi, musician A. R. Rahman, and actress Vidya Balan, visited her residence in Mumbai to pay their respects following the announcement of her death.
