A tragic incident has been reported from Atrai upazila in the Naogaon district of Bangladesh, where a pregnant woman lost her life after being trapped beneath a tree uprooted during a Kalbaishakhi storm.
The deceased has been identified as Arafatun, aged 20, who was approximately three months pregnant, according to local sources. The incident occurred on Sunday night, 26 April, in a temporary settlement situated along the banks of the Atrai River in the Bede community area.
Eyewitnesses and local residents reported that the weather deteriorated suddenly in the evening, with strong winds accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms sweeping across the region. During the storm, a large eucalyptus tree was uprooted by the intense gusts. The fallen tree collapsed directly onto a makeshift shelter constructed from polythene sheets, where Arafatun had been sleeping at the time.
She sustained critical injuries after being trapped beneath the debris for an extended period. Family members and nearby residents rushed to the scene following the incident. After considerable effort, they managed to remove the tree and rescue her from the wreckage.
Arafatun was initially taken to a local health facility for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of her condition, she was subsequently transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care. Despite medical intervention, she was declared dead while undergoing treatment.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the entire Bede settlement. Locals have expressed concern regarding the vulnerability of temporary housing structures in the area, particularly during seasonal storms. Many dwellings in the community are made of lightweight and fragile materials, offering limited protection against severe weather conditions.
On Monday morning, 27 April, the Superintendent of Police for Naogaon, Mohammad Tariqul Islam, visited the affected area. He met with members of the bereaved family, offered condolences, and assured them of necessary assistance. He also reviewed the situation of other affected households in the settlement.
Police from Atrai station have stated that legal formalities are being completed before the body is handed over to the family for burial.
