Police in Lakshmipur’s Ramganj have arrested a teacher and a student in connection with the death of an eighth-grade pupil, Mehedi Hasan, an incident that has triggered widespread shock and unrest in the locality. The accused were produced before the court on Monday as investigators intensified efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
According to police sources, the arrests were made during an ongoing investigation into a murder case filed on 18 June at Ramganj Police Station. Acting on leads gathered during the inquiry, law enforcement officers detained a residential hall superintendent-cum-assistant professor of Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan Academy, along with a student from the same institution. Authorities have withheld the identities of both individuals, citing the sensitivity of the case and the ongoing investigation.
Mehedi Hasan, a Class Eight student and son of businessman Zia Uddin from Sonapur Bazar area, was found dead in the residential hall of the academy on the afternoon of 16 June. Police recovered his body in a hanging position; however, initial observations reportedly indicated signs of physical injury, raising suspicions about the nature of his death. The discovery immediately sparked tension in the area, with agitated locals vandalising the institution’s main gate and several rooms in protest.
Following the incident, Mehedi’s father filed a formal murder case on 18 June, naming the school principal and several others as accused, alongside approximately ten unidentified individuals. The complaint alleged that the death may have resulted from physical assault linked to an incident involving a stolen mobile phone. In the aftermath, the institution’s principal was removed from administrative duties.
Law enforcement officials stated that the investigation remains active, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend other individuals potentially involved. Authorities have emphasised that all angles, including institutional oversight and possible internal misconduct, are being carefully examined.
An Additional Superintendent of Police confirmed that one of the arrestees is a teacher and the other a student, reiterating that their identities have not been disclosed for investigative reasons. He added that the case is highly sensitive and all necessary legal measures are being pursued to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry.
