Brazil forward Neymar will play no part in the remainder of the FIFA World Cup group stage due to a calf injury, presenting a significant tactical challenge for head coach Carlo Ancelotti. The 34-year-old was unable to feature in Brazil’s opening fixture, which ended in a 1-1 draw against Morocco. Reports have now confirmed that the attacker is unavailable for the next two matches, prompting widespread concern regarding his ability to feature in the tournament at all.
The veteran forward sustained the muscular injury on 17 May whilst representing his domestic club, Santos. Although he reported to the Brazilian national team training camp ten days later, the injury has prevented him from participating in any collective field training with the rest of the squad.
According to broadcasting network ESPN, medical assessments have ruled Neymar out of Brazil’s upcoming Group C fixtures against Haiti on 20 June and Scotland on 25 June. Sources indicate that the player underwent a comprehensive medical re-evaluation in the United States, replicating an MRI scan conducted last week. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has chosen not to release the formal results of these latest diagnostic tests.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that Neymar was initially scheduled to return to light training on Monday. However, rather than returning to the pitch, he was redirected to a local hospital for further medical examinations. This sudden alteration in his rehabilitation schedule has intensified the uncertainty surrounding his recovery timeline.
Despite the setback, members of the Brazilian medical staff reportedly remain hopeful that the forward can be restored to full fitness ahead of the knockout stages, provided Brazil secure qualification from Group C.
Prior to the opening match against Morocco, head coach Carlo Ancelotti remained supportive of the forward’s rehabilitation program.
“Neymar is working as hard as possible to recover quickly,” Ancelotti stated. “Our expectation is that his recovery will progress sufficiently to allow him to rejoin the group next week.”
