An NGO worker was robbed at gunpoint in Shreepur upazila of Magura, where three muggers snatched her gold chain and cash. The incident took place at around 7:30pm on Wednesday (19 November) on the road between Kodla and Amalsar in Amalsar Union, sparking fear among local residents.
According to local sources, the woman works at BRAC’s Tikarbila branch. She was riding her motorcycle from Langalbandh Bazar in Shreepur towards Amalsar when the attackers blocked her way on a deserted stretch of road. The muggers attempted to seize her bag and gold jewellery, leading to a physical struggle.
The victim said the three men threatened her with a firearm after finding her alone. She resisted and struck one of them in self-defence. “If I had to die, I wanted to try to survive by fighting back,” she said. During the scuffle, a pistol slipped from one attacker’s hand and fell by the roadside. Hearing her screams, nearby locals rushed to the scene, forcing the assailants to flee.
She added that the attackers managed to escape with her gold chain and bag, which contained around Tk15,000–16,000. Locals later informed police and secured the abandoned weapon.
Shreepur police station officer-in-charge Idris Ali said officers visited the scene and seized the firearm. “We are examining whether the weapon is real or a replica,” he said, adding that operations are underway to arrest those involved.
Residents allege that muggings have increased on isolated roads in the evening due to insufficient patrols. They have urged the authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
