Two Child Measles Deaths Reported in Gazipur

Two infants undergoing treatment with symptoms consistent with measles have died within a 24-hour period at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur, raising concern among local health authorities over the possible spread of the infectious disease among children.

According to hospital officials, the fatalities occurred during the previous day, with both children admitted in critical condition showing classical signs of measles, including fever, cough, cold-like symptoms, and widespread skin rashes. However, neither case had been laboratory-confirmed before the children succumbed to their illness.

The deceased children were identified as nine-month-old Md. Raiyan, son of Zakir Hossain from Chandna Chourasta in Gazipur Metropolitan area, and five-month-old Md. Sifat, son of Khokon Mia from Maona in Sreepur upazila. Both infants were admitted after their conditions deteriorated significantly at home.

Hospital Director Dr Aminul Islam confirmed that the children were brought in with severe complications and were receiving treatment for suspected measles infection. He noted that their conditions were already critical at the time of admission, and despite medical intervention, they died before confirmatory laboratory results could be obtained.

The situation has prompted heightened surveillance across healthcare facilities in the district, as a growing number of children continue to present with similar symptoms. Health authorities reported that admissions linked to suspected measles cases have increased in recent days.

District Civil Surgeon Dr Mamunur Rahman stated that the outbreak situation is being closely monitored. He added that patients showing symptoms are being isolated and treated according to established infectious disease protocols. So far, a significant number of suspected cases have been recorded, with a portion confirmed through clinical or laboratory assessment.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads rapidly, particularly among unvaccinated children. It typically presents with high fever, persistent cough, conjunctivitis, and a characteristic red rash that spreads across the body. In severe cases, especially among infants and malnourished children, it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death if not treated promptly.

Health experts continue to stress the importance of routine immunisation and early medical intervention. They emphasise that measles outbreaks can be effectively controlled through high vaccination coverage and swift isolation of infected individuals.
