A 78-year-old woman has died following a road traffic collision in the Demra area of the capital, after she was struck by a speeding motorcycle while crossing a busy road. The victim, Dalimun Nessa, sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to hospital.
The incident occurred at around 10:00 pm on Sunday (3 May) on the Bhogirgaon bypass road in Demra. According to local accounts and eyewitnesses, Dalimun Nessa had been returning home after completing her work for the day. As she attempted to cross the heavily trafficked roadway near her residence, a fast-moving motorcycle reportedly lost control and hit her from behind with considerable force.
The impact threw her onto the road, leaving her severely injured. Residents in the vicinity quickly responded, rescuing her from the scene and transporting her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Medical officials on duty confirmed that she had already succumbed to her injuries before arrival.
Family members stated that Dalimun Nessa originally came from Suhagpur village in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district. She had been living in a rented house in Sarulia, Demra, with her family. To support her household, she worked as a domestic helper in various residences in the area. On the day of the accident, she had been returning home after completing her regular duties.
Her son, Sohorab Uddin, said his mother was following her usual routine when the accident occurred close to their home. He expressed concern over the lack of traffic discipline in the area, noting that speeding vehicles frequently pose dangers to pedestrians.
Police from Demra station reported that the motorcycle involved in the collision fled the scene immediately after the incident, making identification difficult. Authorities further stated that no formal complaint had been filed by the family. Following their request, the body was handed over to relatives without a post-mortem examination.
Locals have highlighted that the Bhogirgaon bypass road remains extremely busy, with a continuous flow of vehicles often travelling at high speeds. They added that the absence of designated pedestrian crossings and inadequate traffic management measures place residents at significant risk when crossing the road.
