Police in Narayanganj have arrested two alleged members of a fraud ring accused of impersonating personnel from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and extorting money from members of the public over an extended period.
According to a press release issued on Sunday afternoon, 10 May, the information was confirmed by Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Tarek Al Mehdi.
The arrests were made during a police operation conducted on Saturday night, 9 May, at Chashara intersection under Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station.
The detainees were identified as Akhtaruzzaman, 46, son of Atar Ali from Sangrampur South Para under Daulatpur Police Station in Kushtia district, and Amirul Islam Russell, 32, son of Tajul Islam from the East Dekra Miaji Bari area under Chauddagram Police Station in Cumilla district.
Police stated that several items associated with law enforcement were recovered during the raid. These included an ash-coloured bag, a wireless communication set, one pair of handcuffs, and four black vests bearing RAB insignia. Investigators also obtained information relating to a microbus from Dhaka allegedly used by the suspects.
During preliminary interrogation, the two men reportedly admitted to using the identity of RAB personnel in different areas to collect money fraudulently from ordinary citizens. Police further alleged that the suspects and their associates had long been involved in various criminal activities by using uniforms and equipment resembling those of government security agencies.
Law enforcement officials said the misuse of official uniforms and operational equipment had enabled the group to gain the confidence of victims while carrying out fraudulent activities. The investigation is continuing to identify other individuals connected to the alleged network.
Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehdi said a case had been filed against the accused members of the alleged fraud ring. Both detainees were later produced before the court.
