Tragedy struck on Wednesday afternoon (10 December) on the Naogaon–Rajshahi highway, when two motorcyclists lost their lives after being run over by a bus in Hapania, Sadar Upazila, Naogaon. The fatal incident occurred at around 4:30 pm, causing shock and distress among local residents.
The victims have been identified as Mostafa Sardar (55), a local textile mill owner, and Abdul Malek, a worker at Mostafa’s mill and a resident of Porosha Upazila. According to eyewitnesses, the two men were returning home from Hapania on a motorcycle when disaster struck.
Reports indicate that near Tetultoli, a Naogaon-bound BRTC bus attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with the motorbike, instantly killing both men at the scene. Passersby immediately alerted the authorities, and the police arrived promptly to recover the bodies.
“The two bodies were retrieved immediately following the accident. The bus involved has been detained and legal procedures are underway,” said Mohammad Niyamul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the Naogaon–Rajshahi highway, a route notorious for high-speed traffic and frequent accidents. Locals expressed their frustration over the lack of adequate traffic control measures, particularly in areas where overtaking manoeuvres are common.
Authorities are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies. Public safety advocates have emphasised the urgent need for awareness campaigns and road infrastructure improvements along this busy corridor.
