At least two United States service members have been killed while helping repel an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack targeting an airbase in Jordan, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The command also confirmed that another American service member remains missing following the incident.
The US Department of Defence said the missing soldier has not been located since Friday’s attack, and search efforts remain under way. Military officials have not released further details about the individual’s status as rescue and assessment operations continue.
In an update issued on Saturday, CENTCOM said four American personnel injured during the attack were evacuated to a hospital in Jordan for treatment. All four have since been discharged after receiving medical care. Other troops who sustained minor injuries underwent medical examinations before being cleared to return to active duty.
CENTCOM said it was withholding the identities of the two soldiers who lost their lives out of respect for their families. In line with standard US military procedures, the names of the deceased will be released only after their next of kin have been formally notified and at least 24 hours have passed.
The latest casualties add to the growing toll suffered by US forces since military operations against Iran began on 28 February. According to the information released by US authorities, at least 15 American service members have been killed during the conflict and related incidents.
Among those fatalities were six personnel who died when two aerial refuelling aircraft collided over Iraq. Another six US troops were killed in an Iranian drone strike on a command post in Kuwait. Earlier this month, a US Navy pilot also lost his life in a helicopter crash over the Arabian Sea.
The conflict has also resulted in a significant number of injuries. US military officials say more than 400 American service members have been wounded since the campaign against Iran began. While many have returned to duty after receiving treatment, others required more extensive medical care.
The attack on the Jordanian airbase highlights the continuing risks faced by US forces deployed across the Middle East as regional tensions remain high. The deaths of the two soldiers and the disappearance of another underline the increasingly dangerous security environment, with military authorities continuing both the search operation and their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Pentagon and CENTCOM have not provided additional operational details about the strike, citing ongoing military and security considerations. The investigation into the incident is expected to continue as officials assess the full impact of the attack and monitor developments across the region.
