University Classes Suspended Following Khaleda Zia’s Passing

In the wake of the passing of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Dhaka University has announced a three-day period of mourning, during which all classes and examinations will be suspended. The decision, confirmed by the university’s Public Relations Office on Tuesday, aims to pay “proper solemnity and the highest respect and honour” to the late political leader.

The mourning period will be observed from Tuesday through Thursday, during which Dhaka University’s entire academic schedule will be temporarily halted. According to the official statement, the university’s flags have been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect.

The university also noted that, in line with directives from the state, additional commemorative activities will be organised in the coming days. These will include academic seminars, discussions, and cultural programmes highlighting Khaleda Zia’s extensive political career and contributions to the nation.

In addition to academic measures, religious observances have already begun. From Tuesday, prayers and Quranic recitations have been held at the central mosque of Dhaka University, as well as in the mosques of all halls, hostels, and residential areas. These gatherings pray for the eternal peace of Khaleda Zia’s soul. The university statement further mentions that other religious spaces will also conduct special prayer sessions to mark the occasion.

To facilitate participation in the funeral prayers scheduled for Wednesday after the Zuhr (noon) prayer at Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka University has arranged special transport for teachers, students, staff, and officials. This measure ensures that the university community can pay their respects without difficulty.

Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable political career, during which she played a significant role in shaping Bangladesh’s modern political landscape.
