A woman has been arrested by police on charges of attempting to break open a police lock-up to free her husband and carrying out a violent attack on police personnel and central security forces.
According to local police administration, 37-year-old Sarina Bibi was arrested from her residence on Saturday morning. Police stated that Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan was arrested on 8 June while attempting to flee to India via the Nepal border. Since then, he has remained in custody at Falta police station in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
However, on Thursday, a group of his supporters, led by his wife Sarina Bibi, reportedly stormed Falta police station and attempted to forcibly free Jahangir Khan from the lock-up. The incident escalated into a direct violent confrontation with police and central forces.
Investigating officers stated that Sarina Bibi was the main planner behind the attack on Falta police station. According to police sources, she was angered by earlier actions in which Jahangir Khan was allegedly paraded in public with a rope tied around his waist while in custody, which led her to organise the attack.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has directed police to register a case against Sarina Bibi under serious charges related to anti-state activities following the violent protest and attack on law enforcement personnel.
At a public rally in Falta, Suvendu Adhikari condemned the incident and warned of strict legal action against those involved. He stated that anyone taking the law into their own hands would face confiscation of property and strict enforcement of the rule of law in the state.
It is noted that the arrested Jahangir Khan is known to be a close associate of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He has also been accused of establishing long-term political dominance and influence in the Falta region under the Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency.
During a previous state legislative election, he came into national attention after a direct confrontation with IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma. The Election Commission later cancelled polling in the Falta constituency due to serious allegations of malpractice and electoral irregularities.
Jahangir Khan was initially the Trinamool Congress candidate for that seat and was known locally for projecting himself as a dominant political figure. However, ahead of the re-polling ordered by the Election Commission, he withdrew his candidature. Following this, the Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat by a record margin.
After the election, he also remained under scrutiny by India’s Enforcement Directorate over allegations of threatening businessmen and attempts at electoral malpractice.
