A woman has been killed in an incident at Narail Sadar Upazila after being attacked with a traditional cutting instrument while she was asleep. Police have arrested her husband in connection with the case, and he has admitted involvement during preliminary interrogation.
The deceased has been identified as Chandni Akhter Khadija (22), while the accused is her husband, Sakib Sheikh (25), son of Jihad Sheikh from the Damodar area under Phultala Upazila in Khulna.
Police and hospital sources stated that the couple travelled on Monday from Phultala in Khulna to the Bahirgram area of Narail Sadar Upazila to visit the residence of the victim’s maternal aunt. They were staying there with other family members when the incident took place.
According to the police account, the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 am on Tuesday. At that time, the victim was asleep. The accused allegedly used a boti, a commonly used household cutting tool, to strike her. Following the attack, family members found her critically injured and immediately took her to Narail District Hospital. Medical personnel declared her dead upon arrival.
Initially, relatives informed hospital authorities that the victim had accidentally fallen onto a boti, resulting in severe injuries and heavy blood loss. However, law enforcement officers later examined the scene and collected evidence, which led to further scrutiny of the circumstances described by the family.
Police reported that inconsistencies in the initial explanation, along with the behaviour and statements of the husband, raised suspicion. Officers from Narail Sadar Police Station subsequently detained Sakib Sheikh for questioning. During initial interrogation, he reportedly confessed to killing his wife.
Authorities stated that preliminary investigation suggests the presence of domestic disputes between the couple. Police also noted possible issues related to substance use and unemployment on the part of the accused as background factors under consideration. These observations are part of the early investigative findings and have not yet been formally concluded.
The body of Chandni Akhter Khadija has been sent to the morgue of Narail District Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that legal proceedings are continuing and that further investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
