A 55-year-old day labourer, Shahnoaz Begum, has died after being caught between two trains while crossing railway tracks in Uttara, Dhaka. The tragic incident occurred on Monday night (29 June), leaving the local community in deep shock and grief.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, Shahnoaz Begum had finished her day’s work at a construction site in the Azampur area of Uttara and was returning home as usual. Like many pedestrians in the busy neighbourhood, she attempted to cross the railway line on foot, using a commonly used informal crossing point.
Trouble unfolded in a matter of seconds. Two trains approached from opposite directions while she was midway across the tracks. With little time to react or find safety, she became trapped between the oncoming trains and sustained critical injuries.
Locals rushed to her aid almost immediately and transported her to a nearby hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, she was declared dead around 12:30 a.m.
Police stationed at the hospital confirmed the death and said the body had been kept in the morgue for post-mortem examination. The Railway Police are handling the necessary legal procedures related to the incident.
Her son, Sujon, said he received the news and hurried to the hospital, only to find his mother’s lifeless body. He described her as a hardworking woman who had long been contributing to the household through manual labour. On the day of the accident, she had completed construction work in Azampur before heading home.
Family members said Shahnoaz Begum was the wife of the late Milon Mia from Madarganj upazila in Jamalpur district. She had been living in the Tongi Railway Gate area of Dhaka for several years, working in different construction jobs to support her family.
Residents of the area say railway crossings in Uttara remain dangerously exposed, with limited safety infrastructure for pedestrians. Many people still cross the tracks at informal points, especially during busy hours when trains run frequently and at speed.
The incident has sparked concern among locals, who are calling for improved safety measures, including properly designated crossings and footbridges in high-risk areas. They believe such steps could help prevent further tragedies on the busy railway line.
For Shahnoaz Begum’s family, the loss is devastating. A life marked by daily struggle and labour has ended in sudden tragedy, leaving behind grief and difficult questions about safety in one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
