The body of a 26-year-old physician, Abid Hasan Jisan, was recovered from a rented apartment in the Shahbagh area of Dhaka on Monday morning, prompting an ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to initial reports, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unresponsive condition, where attending doctors declared him dead at approximately 2:30 pm after conducting necessary examinations.
Jisan hailed from the Chuadanga Sadar upazila and was the son of Ahsan Habib. He was admitted to Kushtia Medical College during the 2018–19 academic session and later completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Following the completion of his internship, he began working at a private healthcare institution in Dhaka.
He had been residing in a rented apartment on Habibullah Road in Shahbagh with several colleagues. His flatmate, Dipto Singha, stated that Jisan had appeared in normal health earlier on the same day and had even spoken with family members before leaving the residence. However, upon returning home around midday, the flatmate reportedly found him lying motionless on his bed and immediately alerted others before arranging for his transfer to hospital.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the patient was brought in dead, and formal procedures were completed prior to the issuance of the death declaration.
Police from Dhaka Medical College Hospital confirmed that the body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination. Officials noted that the exact cause of death cannot yet be determined and will depend on the autopsy report and further forensic analysis.
Investigators are expected to examine multiple aspects, including the deceased’s living environment, personal belongings, and statements from cohabitants, as part of standard procedure. Authorities have also informed the family of the incident.
While no definitive cause has been established, law enforcement has indicated that possibilities ranging from natural causes to underlying medical conditions or other factors are under consideration pending scientific findings.
In recent years, concerns have been raised in Bangladesh regarding the sudden deaths of young professionals, particularly those in high-pressure fields such as medicine. Experts have previously highlighted that long working hours, irregular routines, and psychological stress may contribute to health complications among healthcare workers. However, in this case, officials have stressed that conclusions can only be drawn following the completion of the post-mortem report.
