A young man has died in what authorities are treating as a suspected case of abduction and assault in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj district, triggering widespread concern and unrest among local residents.
The deceased, Rakib, aged 22, was the son of Almgir Hossain from Shimulia village. For some time, he had been living in a rented accommodation in the Dari Bausia area under Bausia Union, where he was employed at a local industrial facility.
According to family members, the incident unfolded late on Sunday night when three unidentified young men arrived at Rakib’s residence in a vehicle around midnight. They reportedly introduced themselves as acquaintances and claimed they needed to take him to meet a person named Piyas. Despite initial hesitation from the family, the individuals allegedly assured them that Rakib would be returned shortly after the meeting. He then left with them.
When Rakib failed to return throughout the night and his mobile phone became unreachable, his family began searching for him in distress. Early the following morning, locals discovered an unconscious young man lying on the riverbank area of Baluchar and immediately alerted others. The family later identified him as Rakib.
Relatives allege that he showed signs of physical abuse and was unable to speak when found. His condition reportedly deteriorated further while being transported to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Rakib’s mother, Rumi Begum, recounted the harrowing experience, stating that her son had been missing throughout the night. She added that when they finally located him, he was in a critical state and only managed to say he had been beaten before losing consciousness.
Meanwhile, the individual named Piyas has denied any involvement, claiming that he is being deliberately implicated. He stated that Rakib and his uncle were known to him and suggested that others might have used his name to mislead the investigation. He has called for a thorough and impartial inquiry into the matter.
Medical officials at the Gazaria Upazila Health Complex reported that the victim was brought in with extremely critical condition. Although no major external injuries were immediately visible, doctors suspected that death may have resulted from asphyxiation. A definitive cause will be established following the post-mortem examination.
Police from Gazaria station have confirmed that an investigation is underway. Officers stated that three individuals had taken the victim from his residence and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend those responsible.
