Dhaka to Operate 26 Eid Cattle Markets

The city authorities in Dhaka have finalised plans to establish a total of 26 temporary cattle markets across the capital in preparation for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. The initiative aims to ensure an organised, safe, and well-regulated environment for the buying and selling of sacrificial animals while easing pressure on urban traffic and maintaining public order.

According to official sources, the markets will be evenly distributed between the two city corporations: 13 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 13 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Each designated site will function under strict administrative supervision, with support from law enforcement agencies, veterinary professionals, and monitoring teams from the respective city corporations.

Authorities have already published tender notices in national newspapers for the leasing of these markets. Once the lease process is completed, appointed contractors will operate the sites under close municipal oversight to ensure compliance with rules and safety standards.

Key Market Locations

In the DSCC area, notable cattle market sites include open spaces near Postogola cremation ground, Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club, Rahmatganj Club premises, parts of Aftabnagar residential zone, Shyampur–Kadamtali truck stand area, and Golapbagh outer staff quarters. Additional locations include roadside stretches from Kajla Bridge to Matualil and areas adjacent to Jurain railway crossing.

Meanwhile, DNCC will continue operations at the permanent cattle market in Gabtoli, alongside multiple temporary sites in Mirpur Section 6, Kalshi Balu Field, Merul Badda kitchen market vicinity, Bashila 40-foot road area, Uttara sectors 16 and 18, as well as areas near Vatulia, Ranabhola, Kanchkura, and Vatara.

Management and Monitoring Measures

City officials have confirmed that each market will operate for approximately five days, including the day of Eid. However, in previous years, early trading activity before official commencement has been observed in some locations, prompting stricter enforcement measures this time.

Enhanced monitoring will include mobile patrols, surveillance teams, and on-site inspection units to prevent unauthorised operations. Veterinary teams will also be deployed to inspect livestock health and ensure animals meet required standards before sale. Traffic management plans are being prepared to minimise congestion around market zones, particularly in high-density areas.
