Bangladesh’s celebrated vocalist Tapan Chowdhury has made a dynamic return to the music scene, this time not solely as a singer but also in the capacity of a composer. Renowned for his enduring role as the lead singer of the iconic band Souls, Tapan Chowdhury has long held a cherished place in the hearts of music enthusiasts. Now based in Canada, he remains actively engaged in both musical projects and collaborative artistic ventures.
Recently, he composed a fully original song for rising vocalist Priyanka Gop, marking her first formal “original” release. Titled “Koto Din Hoyni Dekha” (“It’s Been So Long Since We Met”), the song is a joint creation of Tapan Chowdhury and lyricist Kabir Bakul, with musical arrangement by Ujjal Sinha.

“Koto din hoyni dekha, koto din dekhi na tomay, shudhu ektu chokher dekha dekhbo bole, ontor jay bhenghe, jay pure jay.”
(“It’s been so long since we met, so long I haven’t seen you; just for a fleeting glance, my heart breaks and mends all at once.”)
Priyanka Gop trained in music at Rabindra Bharati University under distinguished mentors including Pandit Arun Bhaduri, Anand Chakraborty, Ashit Roy, Wahidul Haque, Subir Nandi, and Shubhro Guha. She is proficient in Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, and classical music, and serves as Chair of the Music Department at Dhaka University. In 2015, she won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her contribution to the film “One Day of Anil Bagchi”.
Priyanka shared her excitement:
“I grew up listening to Tapan Dada’s music. Having such a revered artist compose a song for me is an extraordinary honour. I will perform it with all my heart.”
Lyricist Kabir Bakul added:
“We originally wrote this song many years ago. Tapan Dada has now reimagined it for Priyanka. Another artist performed it previously at an event, but this is Priyanka’s first formal recording.”
