ABC Young Performers Awards Return in 2026

Australia’s premier classical music competition, the ABC Young Performers Awards, is set to return in 2026 as part of ABC Classic’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. Applications for participation open on Monday, 16 February, inviting the nation’s most promising young musicians to compete. The awards exemplify ABC Classic’s long-standing commitment to discovering Australia’s emerging talent and inspiring the next generation of classical music enthusiasts.

Open to musicians under 31 years of age, the competition comprises three rigorous rounds, each representing a significant milestone in a performer’s musical journey. The event culminates in a grand final at the Sydney Opera House, which will be broadcast live on ABC TV and aired on ABC Classic radio. Victorious performers not only gain national recognition but also secure opportunities to showcase their talents on international stages.

Historical Significance

The ABC Young Performers Awards traces its roots back to 1944, when ABC launched state-based competitions to identify and nurture young classical music talent. By 1949, the inaugural Commonwealth Final brought together winners from six states, establishing the framework for a truly national competition. Over the decades, the contest has launched the careers of many of Australia’s most distinguished musicians.

Notable winners from the mid-20th century onwards include:

In 1968, the competition was renamed the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition, and by 1978, it was organised into four categories: Strings, Vocal, Keyboard, and Other Instruments. In 1986, state finals were also structured around these four divisions. The current title, ABC Young Performers Awards, was adopted in 1987.

Since 2001, the vocal category has been administered under the Music & Opera Singers Trust (MOST®), which assumed full responsibility for the competition in 2016, with ABC continuing as media and broadcast partner. MOST® provides young musicians with financial awards, scholarships, and performance opportunities at major symphony orchestras and concert halls.

The 2026 edition promises once again to open doors for Australia’s talented young performers on both national and international stages. Beyond competing for awards, participants will gain critical performance experience, mentorship, and exposure to professional orchestras. Each round offers a platform for performers to demonstrate technical skill, expressive depth, and artistic creativity.

As a cornerstone of Australia’s musical heritage, the ABC Young Performers Awards remain not only a competition but a prestigious educational and inspirational platform, nurturing the next generation of classical musicians and providing an unparalleled professional launchpad.
