Mushtaq Highlights Miraz’s Commitment and Discipline

Since taking over as Bangladesh’s one-day international captain, Mehedi Hasan Miraz has faced scrutiny over a perceived dip in his performance. Batting primarily in the lower middle order to accommodate team strategy, questions have arisen regarding whether he is over-focusing on his own contributions. Spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed has dismissed such suggestions, asserting that Miraz remains highly committed to team objectives.

Mushtaq, a former Pakistani international, explained that Miraz’s decisions on the field are deliberate and team-oriented. “I do not think Miraz is playing defensively. He has bowled impressively in recent matches, showing determination and intent. When a player is in form, concern for personal safety rarely influences their approach,” he said.

The coach also offered insight into Miraz’s tactical choices, particularly his reliance on pace bowlers in certain situations. “When Maz Sadakat was at the crease, the ball carried both pace and swing. Miraz trusted the pacers to create opportunities, showing positive and proactive cricket. Plans may succeed or fail, but the intent is always strategic,” Mushtaq added.

Intensive Training and Regaining Rhythm

Mushtaq emphasised Miraz’s hard work in training to regain consistency and match rhythm. “In recent days, Miraz has put in considerable effort. We conducted specific drills, and two days ago, I advised him to focus on long bowling spells rather than batting. He understood and delivered extended spells. For an off-spinner, mastering spin and ball rotation is essential. Miraz has shown that he can absorb coaching advice and translate it into performance,” the coach explained.

Looking ahead, Mushtaq highlighted preparations for challenging conditions, particularly with the upcoming South Africa tour in mind. “We are preparing specifically for the conditions in South Africa. They can be demanding, but with long-term planning and proper adaptation, players must learn to simulate such conditions during practice,” he said.
