Dhaka’s Eid Punjabis Command Premium Prices

As Dhaka gears up for the festive celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr, the city’s high-end shopping districts are witnessing a surge in demand for traditional Punjabis. Crowds are thronging boutiques across Banani, Gulshan, and major malls, drawn not only by style but also by the strikingly wide price spectrum, which has become a topic of conversation among shoppers and fashion enthusiasts alike.

At the centre of attention is House of Ahmed, a luxury boutique in Banani’s CBL Delvista building. Punjabis here start at BDT 6,500 and can soar to an astonishing BDT 500,000. Each piece is handcrafted from premium fabrics and decorated with intricate zari work and fine embroidery, a process that can take several months, with some exclusive designs requiring up to a year of artisan effort. Customers often place orders well in advance to secure these limited-edition creations.

Ahmed Tuhin Reza, Managing Director and Designer of House of Ahmed, told reporters, “These garments demand months of skilled labour, and the cost reflects the meticulous craftsmanship involved. We aim to blend elegance with tradition, elevating the taste of our clientele.” He added that clients can also request to have their Punjabis transformed into Sherwanis, which adds to the overall price.

Despite the premium pricing, sales remain steady. “We have a loyal base of customers who consistently choose our brand. Their preferences guide our new collections,” Reza said. This year, the boutique is also introducing Jamdani-style Punjabis, combining heritage weaving techniques with modern aesthetics.

In the same building, Jurheim offers Punjabis ranging from BDT 5,000 to BDT 100,000, with some previous-year designs on special offer. The boutique emphasises three key qualities: delicate handwork, comfortable fabrics, and limited-edition designs.

The Banani 11th and 12th Road area is home to several other notable boutiques, including J.K. Faren, Puma, Amira, and showrooms like Arong, Infinity, Vashavi, Manyavar, Shoppers World, and Ilien, offering Punjabis from BDT 2,000 up to BDT 500,000. Across Dhaka, premium malls such as Jamuna Future Park, Bashundhara Shopping Mall, and Moghbazar Market are also witnessing a surge in shoppers seeking both branded and high-end traditional wear.
