In preparation for the Eid-ul-Fitr festivities, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has launched a comprehensive three-tier security operation to safeguard the millions of passengers travelling from Dhaka to their hometowns. The initiative includes the deployment of 32 specialised teams, supported by civil units, regular patrols, and checkpoints to ensure round-the-clock monitoring.
RAB-10 Commander and Additional Deputy Inspector General Mohammad Kamruzzaman briefed the media on Tuesday (17 March) at the Sadarghat Launch Terminal. He stated that the measures are intended to maintain orderly travel, prevent criminal activity, and provide immediate assistance to passengers during the holiday rush.
Strategic Deployment
RAB teams are stationed at major terminals and key city locations, including Sadarghat, Syedabad, Shyamoli, Sutrapur, and Kamrangirchar. Six civil teams have also been assigned to support intelligence collection and operational coordination. Security operations will feature a combination of robust vehicular patrolling, foot patrols, and ad hoc checkpoints to monitor suspicious activity and deter crime.
Two control rooms have been established at Sadarghat Launch Terminal and Syedabad Bus Terminal, staffed by RAB personnel 24 hours a day. Passengers can report harassment, fare extortion, or other irregularities either in person or via telephone. RAB has assured that complaints will be acted upon promptly.
Enhanced Vigilance and Enforcement
In anticipation of the Eid exodus, RAB has intensified its enforcement efforts. Recent operations have led to the seizure of a foreign-made pistol, significant quantities of ammunition, and substantial amounts of illicit drugs. These actions reflect RAB’s commitment to proactive security and crime prevention during the festival season.
Commander Kamruzzaman highlighted that approximately 14.5 million residents are expected to leave Dhaka, creating potential vulnerabilities for property crimes such as theft, snatching, and robbery. To mitigate these risks, RAB has increased surveillance across the capital, with special emphasis on night-time patrolling to ensure safety in both residential and transit areas.
| Security Component | Deployment Details | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| RAB Teams | 32 units at key terminals & city points | Continuous security coverage |
| Civil Teams | 6 units | Intelligence gathering and operational support |

RAB has confirmed that this three-tier security arrangement will remain in effect throughout Eid and the post-festival period, providing reassurance to both travellers and city residents.
