Fuel Card System Launched in Chuadanga

The district administration of Chuadanga has approved the introduction of a “fuel card” system aimed at bringing greater order, transparency and regulatory control to the supply, distribution and retail of petroleum products within the district. The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting held recently at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, where the existing fuel storage, transportation, marketing and consumption framework was thoroughly assessed.

Under the new arrangement, fuel cards will be issued to eligible vehicle owners on 30 and 31 March from the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Authorities have stated that only registered vehicles meeting the specified eligibility criteria will be allowed to obtain the cards. From 1 April onwards, fuel will be supplied exclusively to vehicles holding valid fuel cards, marking a significant shift towards a controlled distribution system.

Deputy Commissioner Kamal Hossain stated that the primary objective of the initiative is to prevent misuse of fuel, curb black-market activities, and restore discipline in the supply chain. He further confirmed that fuel distribution across the district’s 22 petrol stations will operate daily from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. However, diesel supply for agricultural purposes will remain available around the clock to ensure uninterrupted support for the farming sector, particularly during critical cultivation periods.

To obtain a fuel card, vehicle owners must submit essential documentation including the vehicle registration number, the driver’s valid driving licence number, and a photocopy of the national identity card. The authorities will conduct verification checks before issuing the cards to ensure authenticity and prevent fraudulent access.

The meeting also issued a stern warning that any irregularities or unethical practices detected at petrol stations will result in the respective operators being held fully accountable. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to strengthen market surveillance and ensure strict compliance with the new system.

Superintendent of Police Ruhul Kabir Khan announced that from 30 March, intensified drives will be conducted against unregistered vehicles, unlicensed drivers, and motorcyclists riding without helmets. He also warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to create artificial fuel shortages, hoard petroleum illegally, or engage in black-market trading.

Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of Chuadanga-6 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), stated that surveillance along the border areas has been significantly strengthened to prevent fuel smuggling. He added that special patrols and intelligence operations are currently ongoing to ensure border security and protect domestic fuel supplies.

Senior district officials, including the Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Nayan Kumar Rajbongshi and Additional District Magistrate BM Tarikul Uz Zaman, along with representatives from various government departments, political leaders, and petrol pump owners’ association members, attended the meeting.

The initiative is being viewed by the local administration as a major step towards a more regulated and accountable fuel management system, which is expected to significantly improve transparency and efficiency in the long term.
