Gautam Gambhir has formally requested an extension of his coaching contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the ongoing Indian Premier League season. Under his leadership, India have already secured victories in the ICC Champions Trophy in the One Day International format and the T20 World Cup, achievements which he is reported to have cited as the basis for seeking a longer tenure with the national team.
At present, Gambhir’s contract with the BCCI runs until the 2027 Cricket World Cup. However, according to a media report, he has expressed interest in continuing as head coach through to the 2028 T20 World Cup and has accordingly submitted a request for an extension. Should the proposal be approved by the board, it could also see him remain in charge during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where cricket is expected to be included in the programme.
In addition to the contract extension request, Gambhir has also reportedly recommended retaining Suryakumar Yadav as captain of India’s T20 side for a further period. This comes despite recent concerns over Suryakumar’s batting form, with the player having struggled to make significant scores, including in the Indian Premier League.
There is, however, differing opinion within the BCCI. Some officials are of the view that, with the 2028 cycle in mind, India should begin shaping a new leadership structure under a different captain. As a result, they are reportedly reluctant to provide long-term assurances regarding Suryakumar’s captaincy role.
Certain members of the board have also expressed surprise at Gambhir’s stance. This is particularly in light of his earlier decisions involving senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who were moved out of the Test setup, while a more lenient approach appears to have been taken in the case of Suryakumar Yadav, according to those observations.
Meanwhile, the Press Trust of India has reported that the BCCI is not expected to take an immediate final decision on either matter. While there is said to be a positive inclination towards extending Gambhir’s coaching tenure, the question of T20 captaincy is expected to remain performance-dependent. For the time being, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to continue as captain through the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, after which the situation will be reassessed.
