A tragic lightning strike claimed the life of a 35-year-old housewife in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district on Thursday (16 April) afternoon, casting a pall of grief over the local community.
The deceased, Rojina Khatun, was the wife of Mijanur Rahman and a resident of Bathangachi village under Mandarbariya Union. According to family members and local sources, she was engaged in routine household cooking at her home when the sudden incident occurred. Around 1:00 pm, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning swept through the area. In a matter of moments, a powerful lightning strike hit the residence, leaving her critically injured and unconscious on the spot.
Family members immediately rushed her to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex. However, attending physicians declared her dead upon arrival, stating that she had likely died before reaching the hospital. The suddenness of the incident left relatives and neighbours in deep shock, many of whom gathered at the house to console the bereaved family.
Local representatives confirmed the incident, describing the lightning strike as extremely intense. They noted that such sudden natural hazards continue to pose serious risks in rural areas, particularly during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons when thunderstorms are frequent.
The Officer-in-Charge of Maheshpur Police Station, Mehedi Hasan, stated that no complaint had been lodged by the family. Following necessary legal formalities, the body was handed over to the relatives.
Lightning strikes remain a significant natural hazard in Bangladesh, especially in rural regions where housing structures, open spaces, and limited protective measures increase vulnerability. Experts consistently advise that during thunderstorms, individuals should seek immediate shelter indoors, avoid open fields, and stay away from metal objects and electrical appliances to reduce the risk of fatal injury.
