Gun Attack on BNP Activist in Meherpur

A Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activist was shot and bombed by unidentified assailants in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district on Monday morning. The attack took place on the Saharbatia–Bhattapara road, leaving the victim critically injured. He has been transferred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

The injured individual has been identified as Mukul Hossain, 55, son of Nek Mohammad of Saharbatia village. Local sources described him as actively involved in BNP-related political activities in the area, although he did not hold any formal party position.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred at dawn while Mukul Hossain was walking along the road from Saharbatia towards Bhattapara village. At Bhattapara junction, a group of assailants opened fire on him. He was reportedly struck in the chest, back and arm, causing him to fall on the ground. Following the gunfire, the attackers detonated several crude bombs before fleeing the scene.

Hearing the explosions, local residents rushed to the spot and found him severely injured and bleeding. He was initially taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical attention. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital.

A physician at Gangni Upazila Health Complex, Dr Omar Faruk, confirmed that the patient had multiple gunshot wounds and his condition was critical at the time of referral.

Two BNP local leaders stated that Mukul Hossain, although not holding any organisational post, was known as a supporter of former Gangni Upazila BNP president Asaduzzaman Bablu. They further noted that he had participated in campaigning for former Member of Parliament Amzad Hossain during the last parliamentary elections. They suggested that the attack could be linked to local dominance disputes or previous enmity, though no confirmed motive has been established.

Police from Gangni Police Station visited the scene shortly after the incident. Officers recovered spent bullet casings and other materials believed to be evidence from the location. Authorities confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those involved. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain order.
