Authorities in Dhaka have begun issuing automated traffic violation cases through artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled CCTV surveillance, marking a significant step towards digital enforcement of road discipline in the capital. From Thursday morning, the Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has officially activated an e-prosecution system that detects offences and generates cases without manual intervention.
Under the new system, AI-powered CCTV cameras installed at key intersections and major roads automatically capture both video footage and still images of traffic violations. These records are then processed through an integrated e-traffic prosecution software, which generates digital case files linked to vehicle ownership details. Notices are subsequently dispatched to offenders via registered postal services.
According to senior officials of the DMP Traffic Division, including Additional Police Commissioner Md. Anisur Rahman, the initiative aims to modernise traffic management, reduce congestion, and ensure stricter enforcement of road regulations. He confirmed that from now on, any violation detected within DMP jurisdiction will result in an automatic case being filed, often without the driver’s immediate knowledge.
The system targets a range of common traffic offences, including illegal parking, driving without registration or fitness certification, blocking intersections, wrong-way driving, failure to obey traffic signals, and stopping beyond designated lines. Once a notice is issued, vehicle owners and drivers are required to appear before the relevant traffic office to settle fines through authorised banking or mobile financial services.
If recipients fail to respond or appear within the stipulated timeframe, further legal action may be initiated. This includes the issuance of summons or arrest warrants through metropolitan magistrates, as part of the enforcement framework outlined by the police.
Key Features of the AI Traffic Enforcement System
| Stage | Process | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Detection | AI CCTV monitoring | Identifies traffic violations in real time |
| Evidence collection | Image and video capture | Records proof of offence automatically |
| Case generation | E-traffic software | Creates digital case linked to vehicle data |
| Notification | Postal delivery | Sends official notice to owner/driver |
| Settlement | Fine payment | Payment via authorised banking systems |
| Legal escalation | Court action | Summons or warrants if unresolved |
Officials have also warned the public against fraudulent activities involving fake messages or payment requests related to AI-generated traffic cases. Citizens have been urged to verify any communication with local police stations or traffic departments before making payments.
The DMP has installed advanced surveillance systems across multiple traffic signal points, with the objective of strengthening compliance and improving overall road safety. The initiative is expected to expand further as part of a broader effort to digitise urban traffic enforcement in Dhaka.
