Mystery Surrounds Father–Son Deaths in Tongi

A deeply disturbing incident in Tongi, Gazipur, has drawn widespread attention after the bodies of a teenage boy and his father were recovered from two separate locations within the same household area. Law enforcement agencies are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, which occurred on Sunday in the North Bonomala neighbourhood.

The deceased have been identified as Sohel Rana (48) and his son Sakhibur Rahman Shoaib (17). Sohel Rana, a former overseas worker who had previously been employed in Malaysia and Singapore, was found dead near a railway line close to their residence. His son Sakhibur, an eleventh-grade student at a college in Uttara, Dhaka, was discovered lifeless inside their home.

According to preliminary police information, both father and son had spent the night in the same room along with another son, Saifur Rahman (27), who has since been taken into custody for questioning. Authorities have noted inconsistencies in his statement, prompting further scrutiny of his possible involvement.

Local residents reported being startled by sudden noises and cries in the early hours of the morning. They later discovered the teenager’s body inside the house, while the father’s body was found a short distance away beside the railway track. The dual recovery from separate locations has intensified questions regarding the sequence of events.

Investigators have observed multiple injury marks on Sakhibur’s body, particularly on the head, arms, and legs. Officials have also indicated that there were signs suggesting possible obstruction to breathing or calling for help. However, forensic confirmation is still awaited.

Sohel Rana’s body being found near the railway line has raised several possibilities, including accidental death, suicide, or deliberate placement after death. Police have stated that no conclusion can yet be drawn until the investigation and post-mortem reports are completed.

Neighbours described the family as generally known in the area, though some claimed there had been ongoing domestic disputes and internal tensions in recent times. These accounts, however, remain unverified and are not part of the official investigation findings.

Police have confirmed that both bodies have been sent for autopsy. Further investigative steps are underway, including forensic examination and questioning of individuals connected to the household. Authorities emphasised that the cause of death will only be confirmed after full medical and investigative reports are completed.
