A brazen incident of robbery has been reported in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj area, where a Malaysian expatriate allegedly fell victim to a gang posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers and had his gold ornaments looted in the early hours of Tuesday (5 May).
The incident took place at approximately 4:00 am near the Jalkuri overpass along the Dhaka–Narayanganj Link Road, a route commonly used by early morning commuters. The victim, Md Abdul Malek (46), a Bangladeshi expatriate recently returned from Malaysia, was travelling towards his residence when he was reportedly intercepted by a group of unidentified individuals.
According to initial accounts and local sources, the perpetrators—believed to be a group of seven to eight people—stopped his vehicle and introduced themselves as members of the Detective Branch of police. They allegedly accused him of suspicious activity and proceeded to question him under the pretext of an official inspection.
The situation escalated rapidly, with the gang reportedly assaulting the victim before forcibly taking possession of his valuables. The attackers are said to have looted approximately eight and a half bhori of gold ornaments from him before fleeing the scene swiftly, taking advantage of the early morning darkness and relatively deserted road conditions.
The incident has triggered concern and unease among local residents, particularly among expatriates who frequently travel through the area upon returning to the country. Community members have expressed alarm over the apparent misuse of law enforcement identity by criminal groups, describing it as a worrying trend that undermines public trust and safety.
Following the incident, Abdul Malek filed a complaint at Siddhirganj Police Station. Duty Officer Sub-Inspector Sekandar confirmed that the victim’s statement had been recorded and that the matter is being treated with seriousness. He added that legal procedures are underway and efforts are in progress to identify and apprehend those involved.
Local residents have also noted that while incidents of snatching are not entirely new in the area, the use of fake law enforcement identities has added a more alarming dimension to recent criminal activity. They have called for increased patrols, especially during late-night and pre-dawn hours, along major highways and overpasses.
Authorities are now being urged to strengthen surveillance, enhance coordination among patrol units, and take swift action against organised gangs operating under false identities.
