Narayanganj Police Officers Withdrawn After Assault Incident

Six police personnel have been withdrawn from operational duty in Narayanganj following a violent incident in which detained suspects were allegedly snatched from custody after an attack on officers in Fattullah.

The action comes after a group of assailants reportedly assaulted police personnel and freed five accused individuals who had been arrested during an anti-crime operation. The withdrawal was confirmed on Friday morning by Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munsi, who also reiterated that no criminal element would be spared in ongoing drives against drugs and organised crime.

According to police sources, the incident took place on Wednesday (6 May) at around midday in the Hashambagh area of West Masdair in Fattullah. Acting on information that a residence belonging to retired police constable Md. Solaiman was being targeted by a group involved in looting, a team from Fattullah Model Police Station was deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers detained five individuals allegedly involved in the robbery. The suspects were handcuffed, and a number of stolen household items were reportedly recovered during the initial operation. However, before the situation could be fully stabilised, a mob of approximately 30 to 35 individuals launched a coordinated attack on the police team.

In the ensuing chaos, the attackers managed to overpower the officers and forcibly remove the five detained suspects, still in handcuffs, from police custody. The incident has raised serious concerns over operational security and the level of preparedness during field arrests in densely populated residential areas.

Authorities have since launched an internal review alongside a criminal investigation to identify those involved in both the assault on police and the escape of the detainees. Law enforcement officials have stated that arrests will follow and strict legal action will be taken against all perpetrators.

Police officials have indicated that the withdrawal is an administrative measure pending further inquiry into the operational response and security lapses during the incident.

Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munsi emphasised that ongoing anti-narcotics and anti-crime operations across Narayanganj will continue without interruption, and that organised criminal groups will face sustained enforcement pressure in the coming days.

Investigations into both the original looting case and the subsequent attack on police remain ongoing.
