A mobile court in Sitakunda sentenced three young men to one month of simple imprisonment after they were detained during a raid on an alleged gambling session inside a truck depot in the upazila.

The operation was conducted late on Thursday night at approximately 12:30am at Sohel Truck Depot, a facility owned by Md Sohel in the Gamarital area of Sonai Chhari Union. According to local administration officials, the raid was carried out following repeated allegations that gambling activities were being organised at the depot during the night.

The detainees were identified as Md Azam, son of Abu Taher from the Shitalpur area of Sonai Chhari Union; Md Kamal, son of Shah Alam from the Pakka Mosque area; and Md Nazim Uddin, son of Abul Khayer from the Kadam Rasul area.

The mobile court was led by Sitakunda Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Md Fakhrul Islam. He stated that the administration had been receiving complaints regarding regular gambling activities at the Sohel Truck Depot. After confirming that another gambling session was taking place on Thursday night, officials conducted the operation and found the three men participating in gambling activities.

The magistrate said the accused were sentenced under Section 4 of the Public Gambling Act of 1867. Each individual received one month of simple imprisonment.

He also stated that such drives would continue in the public interest as part of ongoing efforts to prevent unlawful activities in the area.

The Public Gambling Act of 1867 remains one of the legal provisions used in Bangladesh to address gambling-related offences. Mobile courts, operating under executive magistrates, regularly conduct drives against activities considered unlawful under existing legislation. In this incident, the administration applied Section 4 of the law after the accused were allegedly found gambling during the raid.
