Man Detained With Foreign Pistols In Noakhali

The Begumganj Model Thana Police have detained a 21-year-old man identified as Abdur Rahman, also known as Rahim, following a search operation conducted at a security checkpoint in the Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali district. Law enforcement officials managed to recover three foreign-made pistols, eight rounds of live ammunition, and three magazines from his possession during the targeted interception. Furthermore, a registration-free motorcycle utilised by the suspect was officially seized by the operational authorities.

Operational Checkpoint and Arms Interception

According to validated statements from police sources, the targeted operation was executed on Monday, 8 June, during the afternoon hours. The Begumganj Model Thana Police team carried out the interception in an area adjacent to the Baitun Noor Jame Mosque, situated on the Gopalpur-Banglabazar Road within the Gopalpur Union of the upazila. Law enforcement officials identified the detained individual as Rahim, the son of Jasim Uddin, residing at the Bhuiyan house in Basantabag village under Ward No. 8 of the Gopalpur Union. Following his immediate arrest, the suspect was transported to the Begumganj Police Station for intensive interrogation regarding the direct source and intended purpose of the recovered firearms.

The police administration explained that special operations and security checkpoints have been established at various critical junctions throughout the upazila to maintain law and order, which includes inspecting vehicles and searching suspicious individuals. In accordance with these ongoing security protocols, a checkpoint was activated on the Gopalpur-Banglabazar Road.

At approximately 6:15 pm, Rahim was observed travelling at a high speed on a motorcycle, prompting the deployed officers to signal him to stop. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officers noted that the suspect’s behaviour, physical movements, and statements were highly suspicious, which led them to perform a thorough physical search. During the inspection, the police team discovered and seized three foreign-made pistols tucked into his waistband, along with eight bullets and three ammunition magazines. The unregistered motorcycle driven by the suspect was simultaneously impounded.

Competing Political Affiliations and Counterclaims

The arrest of the armed suspect quickly triggered conflicting statements from local political leaders regarding his organisational ties. Kamakkhya Chandra Das, the President of the Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), published a post on his personal Facebook profile asserting that the individual apprehended with firearms by the police is an active worker of the local Jamaat-e-Islami organisation.

When asked to clarify these allegations, the Secretary of the District unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, Md. Borhan Uddin, firmly denied any link, stating that the person detained with weapons has absolutely no relationship with Jamaat-e-Islami. He noted that during election campaigns, many individuals position themselves next to candidates to take photographs, which does not grant them official party membership or status as a worker.

Borhan Uddin further asserted that, according to the information he received, Rahim had been regularly moving around with a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal worker named Samrat ever since the conclusion of the elections, and added that the seized unregistered motorcycle actually belonged to Samrat.

Legal Actions and Upcoming Judicial Proceedings

The Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) for Noakhali, Abu Tayeb Md. Arif Hossain, confirmed the details of the detention, stating that the motorcyclist was subjected to a search due to his highly suspicious movements. He verified that the search yielded three pistols, eight bullets, and three magazines, adding that the process for initiating the necessary legal measures against the individual is currently underway.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Police Station, Md. Shamsuzzaman, stated that the police department’s targeted operations to apprehend illegal weapon holders and identified terrorists within the Begumganj region will continue without interruption. The police administration confirmed that the arrested suspect, Rahim, is scheduled to be forwarded to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Noakhali on Tuesday, 9 June, to face formal judicial proceedings.
