A violent confrontation between residents of two villages in the Pangsha Upazila of Rajbari District has left one man dead and several others injured, following a prolonged dispute over land ownership and local influence. The incident escalated into widespread unrest involving retaliation, vandalism, looting, and arson, prompting heightened tension across the area.
The deceased, Jamin Biswas (55), succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. He was initially admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition after sustaining severe wounds during the clashes. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the capital for advanced care, where he later died. He was the son of the late Hossain Ali Biswas and a resident of Dhapa Majail village under Pattan Union.
According to local sources, tensions first emerged on Thursday in Daribhanglat village under Kashbamajail Union when a dispute arose over the measurement of a piece of land. During this initial altercation, Motiur Biswas was allegedly assaulted by members of the opposing group, triggering retaliatory anger between the two sides.
The situation worsened on Saturday morning when supporters of Motiur Biswas reportedly confronted Hakim Mondol to demand an explanation over the earlier incident. The confrontation quickly escalated into another round of hostility, with allegations that Hakim Mondol was also manhandled, further inflaming tensions between the villages.
The most serious outbreak of violence occurred on Sunday morning when supporters of Hakim Mondol crossed a canal and advanced towards the residence of Majid Biswas in Dhapa Majail village. As Jamin Biswas and his associates attempted to block their advance, a fierce clash erupted. During the confrontation, Jamin Biswas was struck with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. At least two to three other individuals were also reported injured in the violence.
Following his death in Dhaka, the situation in the locality deteriorated further. Overnight, retaliatory attacks were reportedly carried out in Daribhanglat village, where houses were vandalised, household goods looted, and several properties set on fire. There were also allegations of livestock theft, adding to the scale of destruction and distress.
By Monday morning, the area remained tense, with many families reportedly leaving their homes out of fear. Law enforcement agencies have increased their presence to prevent further escalation and maintain order.
