At least three people have been killed and several others critically injured after a Tazia procession came into contact with a high-voltage electricity line in Ratlam district, Madhya Pradesh, during Muharram commemorations. The incident took place late Thursday evening in a rural part of the district, turning a religious gathering into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
According to eyewitness accounts, the procession was moving through the village when the tall structure carrying the Tazia struck an overhead power transmission line. The contact triggered a sudden and powerful electric shock that affected those directly holding the structure. Several others standing nearby were also caught in the current as panic spread through the crowd.
Officials confirmed that the overhead line involved was a high-voltage 11 kilovolt transmission cable, positioned at an estimated height of around 20 to 25 feet. Investigators believe the height of the Tazia, combined with the narrow passage of the procession route, contributed to the fatal contact with the live wire.
Ratlam Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar stated that three individuals were declared dead following the incident, while around a dozen others suffered serious burns and injuries. Emergency services and local residents quickly moved the injured to nearby hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Medical staff have described the condition of five victims as critical.
The incident has triggered concern over safety arrangements during large public religious gatherings. Locals alleged that electricity in the area should have been temporarily disconnected as a precautionary measure, a step that is commonly taken during such processions to prevent accidents involving overhead wires. Questions have also been raised about whether adequate clearance checks were carried out along the procession route in advance.
Footage from the aftermath showed scenes of confusion and distress, with several people lying on the ground and others attempting to assist the injured before emergency responders arrived. The scale of the panic reflected how quickly the situation escalated once the electric shock occurred.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the role of local administration and electricity providers. As investigations continue, the tragedy has cast a shadow over the observance of Muharram in the region, where such processions are a long-standing tradition marked by communal participation and religious significance.
