Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has expressed optimism that talismanic forward Neymar will feature heavily in their crucial knockout fixture against Japan. The high-stakes round-of-32 World Cup match is scheduled to take place on Monday in Houston, Texas.
The 34-year-old superstar has been restricted recently due to a persistent calf muscle injury, which kept him out of the starting lineup during the initial stages of the tournament. During Brazil’s commanding 3-0 group-stage victory over Scotland, Neymar was eased back into action, playing a brief 15-minute cameo from the substitutes’ bench. However, his physical recovery has accelerated significantly since that appearance.
Speaking to reporters during Sunday’s pre-match press conference, Ancelotti shared updates regarding the forward’s fitness levels. The veteran Italian manager noted that Neymar’s progress over the past seven days had been remarkable. He admitted it was frustrating to limit a player of his calibre to just 15 minutes in the previous fixture. Happily for the squad, the medical team has cleared the player to handle a much larger workload in Monday’s do-or-die encounter.
Neymar’s brief appearance against Scotland was deeply symbolic, marking his return to the international arena after an absence of nearly two and a half years from the national setup. Given his vast experience in high-pressure knockout football, the Brazil camp is counting on him to assume a central creative role against a highly disciplined Japanese side.
The South American giants experienced a mixed start to their World Cup campaign in Group C. They opened the tournament with a cagey 1-1 draw against Morocco, raising minor concerns among fans and pundits. However, Ancelotti’s men quickly found their rhythm. They secured back-to-back 3-0 triumphs over Haiti and Scotland, finishing comfortably at the top of their group to secure qualification.
In Neymar’s absence, the goalscoring burden has been deftly managed by other star attackers. Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior has been in sensational form, netting four goals during the group stage to spearhead the frontline. He has been ably supported by forward Matheus Cunha, who contributed three goals of his own. Whilst the addition of a rejuvenated Neymar boosts Brazil’s attacking fluidity, unlocking Japan’s compact defensive block and rapid counter-attacking system will provide a stern test for the tournament favourites.
