A grave incident unfolded in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday evening, when six children aged between 13 and 17 were abducted from a local playground in Baharchhara. Two of the children were able to escape through quick thinking and alertness, but four are still in captivity, raising alarm among local residents and authorities.
According to Hafiz Ahmad, a ward councillor for Baharchhara Union’s Ward 4, the children were playing in South Shilkhali East Para around 6:00 pm when armed men descended from the nearby hills and forcibly took them into the forested terrain. The sudden and violent nature of the attack has left the community shaken.
Councillor Ahmad added, “Local residents immediately contacted the police. We are coordinating with law enforcement to carry out thorough searches in the surrounding hills. Despite our efforts, by 9:30 pm four children had still not been located. It appears likely that the kidnappers’ intent was to demand ransom.”
Inspector Durjoy Biswas, in charge of Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre, confirmed that police teams had already surveyed the area. “No formal complaint had been filed with us as of 9:30 pm, but operations to locate and safely rescue the children are underway,” he said.
Statistics from Cox’s Bazar district police indicate a disturbing trend: over the last 21 months, 272 individuals, including minors, have been abducted from various locations across Teknaf. Most have been released after ransom payments, highlighting the prevalence of financially motivated kidnappings in the region.
Security analysts and local officials warn that such abductions have a broader impact beyond the immediate victims. The fear instilled within communities, particularly in isolated and hilly areas, undermines public confidence and contributes to ongoing insecurity. The targeting of children is especially concerning, as it exposes vulnerabilities in community protection and law enforcement systems.
Experts recommend increased vigilance, community policing, and rapid response mechanisms in vulnerable regions. They emphasise that residents should be alert to suspicious activity and cooperate closely with authorities to prevent further incidents.
The psychological and social consequences for the abducted children and their families can be long-lasting. Kidnapping for ransom not only causes immediate physical harm and distress but also threatens community cohesion and stability. The Teknaf case underscores the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures for children, including the implementation of risk awareness programmes, enhanced patrolling, and improved communication channels between residents and law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have pledged to dedicate all available resources to locate and rescue the four missing children while reinforcing preventive strategies to safeguard the region against similar criminal acts. The incident is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by children in remote areas and the necessity of proactive and coordinated community safety efforts.
