A seven-month-old child has died with symptoms of measles at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, raising the total number of child deaths linked to measles symptoms at the hospital to 28.
The child died at approximately 5:30am on Monday while undergoing treatment at the hospital. The information was confirmed by Dr Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, Assistant Director (Administration) of the hospital.
According to hospital sources, the infant had been admitted to the hospital on the morning of 8 May. The child remained under treatment until death occurred early on Monday.
Hospital authorities stated that pressure on the facility from patients with measles symptoms remains at a concerning level. Over the past 24 hours, 24 additional patients have been admitted for treatment. During the same period, 35 patients recovered and returned home.
At present, a total of 89 patients suffering from measles symptoms are receiving treatment at the hospital.
The hospital administration said treatment and monitoring activities for admitted patients are continuing. Medical staff are maintaining observation of children admitted with fever, rash and other symptoms associated with measles.
The latest death comes amid continued admissions of children showing symptoms consistent with the highly contagious viral disease. Hospital officials indicated that the number of patients seeking treatment has placed sustained pressure on paediatric care services.
