Young Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run While Riding Motorcycle with Husband

A tragic road accident in Mollahat Upazila of Bagerhat District has claimed the life of a young woman after she was struck by a speeding vehicle while travelling on a motorcycle with her husband. The victim, Nira Begum, aged 22, died on the spot after being run over by an unidentified vehicle on the Dhaka–Khulna Highway on Monday evening, 15th December.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:30 pm near the Joydihi Bus Stand, a busy stretch of the national highway known for heavy traffic, particularly during evening hours. The sudden loss has plunged the victim’s family and the local community into deep mourning.

According to police and local witnesses, Nira Begum was travelling as a pillion rider on a motorcycle driven by her husband, Nazir Sheikh, when she suddenly lost balance and fell onto the road. Moments later, a fast-moving vehicle—yet to be identified—ran over her and fled the scene without stopping. The impact was severe, and she succumbed to her injuries instantly.

Nira Begum was a resident of Kahalpur village under Mollahat Upazila and the daughter of Farhad Molla. Relatives described her as a young woman full of life, newly married, and devoted to her family. News of her death spread rapidly through the village, leaving neighbours and loved ones devastated.

Upon receiving the report, a team from Mollahat Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene. Fire service personnel recovered the body and later handed it over to the Mollahat Highway Police for further legal procedures. The road briefly experienced traffic congestion as authorities worked to secure the area and remove the body.

Confirming the incident, Shariful Islam, Station Officer of Mollahat Fire Service, stated that his team responded immediately after being alerted and carried out the recovery operation swiftly to prevent further disruption or danger on the highway.

Meanwhile, Md Asaduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Mollahat Highway Police Station, said that legal formalities were underway to hand over the body to the victim’s family. He also confirmed that efforts have begun to identify the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run incident.

“We are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and speaking with witnesses. Legal action will be taken once the vehicle responsible is identified,” the OC said.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety, reckless driving, and hit-and-run cases on national highways. Local residents have demanded stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased surveillance in accident-prone areas to prevent such tragedies in the future.
