A day after the men’s team suffered a heavy defeat at the SAFF Futsal Championship, Bangladesh’s female footballers delivered a resounding response on the international stage. On Thursday, the men’s team had been humbled 5-1 by Pakistan at the Nonthaburi venue in Bangkok, Thailand, a loss that eliminated Saeed Khodarahmi’s side from the title race.
However, on Friday (23 January), Bangladesh’s women faced Pakistan in a fiercely anticipated clash—and they seized the opportunity to turn the tables emphatically. The Bangladeshi side ran out 9-1 victors, showcasing precision, pace, and dominance throughout the match. Captain Sabina Khatun was the standout performer, scoring four goals, while Krishna Rani Sarkar and Naushin Jahan each netted a brace. The ninth goal came courtesy of Nilufa Yasmin Neela.
With this victory, Bangladesh now boasts four wins and one draw from five matches, amassing 13 points and firmly positioning themselves as title favourites. India occupies second place with nine points, though they have one game in hand.
Bangladesh’s campaign began strongly, defeating formidable India 3-1. Their second match ended in a 3-3 draw against Bhutan, but the team quickly regained momentum, beating Nepal 3-0 and Sri Lanka 6-2 in consecutive fixtures. Friday’s performance reinforced their dominance.
From the outset, Bangladesh looked composed and clinical. In the 7th minute, a cross from Matsushima Sumaiya, following a pass from Krishna, allowed Sabina to open the scoring. Before Pakistan could recover, Neela doubled the lead with a well-placed strike. Naushin then extended the advantage to 3-0 by the 10th minute, adding a second goal two minutes later. Towards the end of the first half, Bangladesh added two further goals within a single minute—Krishna and Sabina both finding the net—sending Pakistan into half-time trailing 7-0.
The second half saw Bangladesh manage the game with confidence, though they continued to threaten. Krishna scored her second of the match, Anmol Hira added another for Pakistan, and Sabina completed her tally with two late goals, one from a difficult angle. The match concluded 9-1, a comprehensive and morale-boosting win.
Bangladesh will face the Maldives in their final round-robin match on Sunday. A victory there would secure the SAFF Women’s Championship title, capping an impressive campaign.
