In a startling incident in the New Bridge area under Baklia Police Station, three fish traders have alleged that they were robbed of Tk 66,000 by an individual posing as a police officer. The event has raised concerns, particularly as a police patrol vehicle was reportedly stationed nearby at the time, yet no intervention occurred.
The victims—Munir, Yusuf, and Hridoy—regularly conduct fish trade at Fisheries Ghat. Munir Kalbela recounted that after concluding their sales on Wednesday, they were returning home when the incident occurred. Near Mannan Tower, in front of Asia Bank, a man claiming to be a police officer allegedly stopped them, conducted a search, and forcibly took their cash.
“We were returning home as usual after our daily fish sales. Someone identifying as a police officer stopped us, searched us, and snatched Tk 66,000. Surprisingly, a police patrol car was right beside us, yet no one intervened,” Munir said.
Police Response and Investigation Status
Assistant Sub-Inspector Zahirul Islam, assigned to local patrol duties, stated he was not present at the scene as he was occupied at court with another matter. The three traders, seeking assistance at Baklia Police Station, claimed they received limited cooperation. Duty officer Assistant Sub-Inspector Jesmin explained that while the traders visited the station, they did not clearly specify the nature of their complaint, only hoping for contact with the Officer-in-Charge.
Attempts to reach the Officer-in-Charge, Mr Md. Solaiman, were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered. Consequently, an official statement from the head of the police station could not be obtained.
