Anowara Mother-Daughter Killing Case

A mother and daughter were brutally killed in Anowara Upazila, Chattogram, Bangladesh in a violent incident that police say was motivated by an attempt to avoid repayment of borrowed money and to seize a loan-related document. The main accused, identified as Rimon Barua, also known as Tejpriyo Barua, has been arrested by police in connection with the double murder.

According to police statements disclosed at a press briefing held on Monday (15 June) at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Chattogram District, Bangladesh, the incident occurred between approximately 10:30 pm and 11:00 pm on Saturday (13 June) in Chenamati village under Poraikora Union of Anowara Upazila.

The victims were identified as Aini Barua (40) and her daughter Priyonti Barua (16). Both were the wife and daughter of Sujan Barua of the same locality. A five-year-old child, Piyas Barua, who was present inside the house at the time of the attack, survived but sustained injuries.

Police Superintendent Md Masud Alam stated that following an emergency call to the national emergency service (999), Anowara police reached the scene and recovered the bodies from different parts of the house, including the veranda and an interior room. A coordinated investigation was launched immediately by the district detective branch and local police units.

The suspect was arrested late on Sunday night (14 June) from the Patiya Upazila, Chattogram, Bangladesh area based on technical analysis, intelligence inputs, and local information gathered during the investigation. During preliminary interrogation, Rimon Barua reportedly confessed to the killings.

Police account of motive and sequence of events

Police said the accused had borrowed BDT 117,000 from the husband of the deceased, Sujan Barua, to purchase an auto-rickshaw. The repayment arrangement included instalments with interest, documented through a written stamped agreement (loan deed). Disputes emerged after regular repayments were not made, leading to tensions between the parties.

Investigators stated that Rimon Barua intended to recover the stamped document to escape the financial obligation. On the night of the incident, he allegedly lay in wait behind the house. When Aini Barua opened the back door and stepped outside, she was attacked with a sharp weapon. Hearing her screams, her daughter Priyonti Barua rushed to the scene and was also stabbed.

After committing the attack, the accused reportedly fled the scene, taking a mobile phone from the house. During his escape, he allegedly disposed of the knife in a nearby canal.

Following his arrest, police recovered the weapon from the canal based on information provided by the suspect. The mobile phone belonging to the victims was later recovered from a pond in the Patiya area.
