The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the bail granted to Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, in a total of ten criminal cases, including allegations of murder. The latest ruling effectively removes all legal obstacles to her release, according to her legal representatives.
On Sunday (10 May 2026), the Appellate Division dismissed a petition filed by the State challenging earlier High Court bail orders. The bench, headed by the Chief Justice, affirmed the decisions of the High Court, thereby keeping the bail orders intact. Senior lawyer Advocate Md Motahar Hossain Saju represented Ms Ivy during the hearing.
Following the verdict, defence lawyers stated that there is now no remaining legal impediment to her release from custody, as all ten cases in which she had been shown arrested are covered under standing bail orders.
Ms Ivy was first arrested on 9 May 2025 from her residence, Chunka Kutir, located in the Deovog area of Narayanganj city. Subsequently, she was shown arrested in multiple cases filed against her. Initially, the High Court granted her bail in five cases, but that order was later stayed by the Appellate Division following an appeal from the State.
Later developments saw another set of five cases being brought against her, in which she was again shown arrested on 18 November 2025. In response, a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted bail in those cases on 26 February 2026.
With the latest decision from the Appellate Division, all ten bail orders now remain in effect, clearing the way for her release, subject to procedural formalities.
