BNP Meeting Turns Deadly in Noakhali

A violent altercation during a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) meeting in Kabirhat, Noakhali, resulted in the death of a local man on Saturday night. The incident occurred at around 10:00 pm near Kazi Bari, adjacent to Kalirhat Market in Ward 2 of Narottampur Union.

The deceased has been identified as Mizanur Rahman, also known as Roni, aged 35. He was the son of Md. Shahid of Jainpur in Kabirhat municipality and a father of two children. Local police and community sources noted that Mizanur faced six criminal cases, including allegations of robbery.

According to eyewitnesses and police, the conflict began during a BNP meeting held at Kalirhat Market at approximately 8:00 pm, organised as part of preparations for the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections. Mizanur reportedly attended the gathering, claiming to be a devoted party worker. However, an argument soon erupted between him and other party members. When several leaders attempted to confront him, Mizanur fled the venue.

Two hours later, Mizanur was intercepted near Kazi Bari by a group of individuals. The assailants assaulted him with sticks and iron pipes, continuing the attack until he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The attackers reportedly left his body on the road before fleeing. Police later recovered the corpse.

Authorities confirmed that a blood-stained stick and an iron pipe were retrieved from the scene, while Mizanur’s pockets contained a toy pistol and a knife.

Harunur Rashid Harun, former president of Ward 2 BNP in Narottampur Union, said, “We were discussing election matters at our office. Mizanur came and started making contradictory statements. After asking him to leave, he went away. Later, we heard about his killing, but we do not know who was responsible.”

Investigating officer Md. Manjur Alam of Kabirhat Police Station stated, “Mizanur had been implicated in various cases. He was beaten to death by a group. The body has been sent to Noakhali General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.”
