Ekushey Padak recipient Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan remains one of the most celebrated figures in the history of Bangladeshi classical music. Born on 6 July 1958 in Nabinagar of Brahmanbaria, Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan was raised in one of the subcontinent’s most distinguished musical families. Music was not merely an artistic pursuit within the household; it was a way of life, passed down through generations with discipline, devotion and deep respect for tradition. Growing up in such an environment laid the foundation for a career that would later earn him national and international recognition.

He was the grandson of the legendary maestro Ustad Ayet Ali Khan, one of the pioneering figures of classical music in the region. His father, Ustad Abed Hossain Khan, was an acclaimed classical musician and sitar exponent who played a vital role in nurturing his son’s early musical education. The family’s contribution to Bangladeshi music extended far beyond these two distinguished names. Among its notable members were Ambiya Khanam, eminent musician Bahadur Hossain Khan, music researcher and writer Mobarak Hossain Khan, respected music director Sheikh Sadi Khan, Tansen Khan, Mamata Khanam, Yasmin Khanam, Beethoven Khan, Kohinoor Khanam and Rizia Begum. Although Kohinoor Khanam and Rizia Begum passed away before their artistic potential could fully flourish, they remain part of the family’s rich cultural legacy.

Shahadat Hossain Khan received his earliest lessons from his father and other senior members of the family. Years of rigorous practice, unwavering discipline and an uncompromising commitment to his craft enabled him to develop an individual style of sarod performance that won admiration from audiences at home and abroad.
