In a significant law enforcement operation in Boalkhali, Chattogram, joint forces conducted a raid on the residence of an Awami League leader, seizing illegal firearms, weapons manufacturing equipment, and arresting two brothers. The arrested individuals were subsequently handed over to the local police. The incident occurred late Friday night in the Bengura area of the Upazila.
The two men taken into custody are Saiful Islam (56) and Salahuddin Rumi (51), sons of the late Abul Bashar from the same locality. Their elder brother, Belal Hossain, is the former chairman of Sarowatali Union and the current president of the union’s Awami League branch. The raid specifically targeted his residence.
According to sources from the joint forces, the operation was carried out under the supervision of the 48th Air Defence Regiment of the Bangladesh Army, with a contingent from the Boalkhali Army Camp directly involved. During the raid, the two suspects attempted to escape by jumping into a nearby pond but were apprehended. A thorough search of the property led to the seizure of multiple firearms and related equipment.
Recovered items included:
| Item | Quantity | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign-made shotguns | 4 | Illegally held |
| Foreign-made pistols | 2 | Part of ongoing arms cases |
| Ammunition | 13 rounds | Various calibres |
| Weapons manufacturing equipment | Large quantity | Tools for illicit production |
In an official statement, Camp Commander Major Md. Rasel Pradhan said that “Salahuddin Rumi faces six cases, including weapons charges, while Saiful Islam has four such cases registered against him. Both have previously been involved in terrorist activities and illegal manufacturing and sale of firearms.”
Boalkhali Police Officer-in-Charge Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed, “The army handed over the two suspects to our custody. Following their court appearance, they were remanded to jail.”
Local residents reported a rising trend of illegal arms production and trading in the area, raising public safety concerns. Law enforcement authorities consider this operation a major success in curbing the proliferation of illegal weapons, reinforcing security in Boalkhali and surrounding union areas. Officials have indicated that monitoring will continue to prevent further illicit activities.
With these arrests and confiscations, authorities aim to disrupt networks facilitating illegal arms manufacturing and distribution, ensuring community safety and law compliance in the region.
