Chinese Man Reports Missing Wife, Cash Incident

A Chinese national has alleged that his wife has gone missing along with USD 4,000 and important personal documents following their marriage in Bangladesh, prompting him to seek assistance from both her family home and local police in northern Bangladesh.

The complainant, identified as An Hongwei, visited the home of his wife, Morsheda Begum, in Dharmapur village under Kashipur Union in Fulbari Upazila, within Kurigram District, on Monday afternoon. His unexpected arrival drew considerable attention from local residents, many of whom gathered at the scene after learning of a foreign national’s presence in the rural community.

According to police and local sources, An Hongwei and Morsheda Begum first met while both were working in the Savar industrial area near Dhaka. Their acquaintance gradually developed into a relationship, leading to a family-arranged marriage held on 20 April this year. Following the wedding, the couple reportedly travelled to the bride’s village home.

Tensions are understood to have emerged shortly afterwards, although accounts of the circumstances remain unclear. The Chinese national has claimed that his wife subsequently went missing, taking with her USD 4,000 in cash along with key personal documents belonging to him.

Morsheda Begum had previously been married around a decade earlier to a man from the same village, with whom she has an eight-year-old daughter. That marriage ended following family disputes, after which she moved to Dhaka for work, where she later met An Hongwei.

A local public representative from Kashipur Union noted that the marriage between Morsheda Begum and the Chinese citizen had already been a subject of discussion within the community, given her previous marital history. The current allegations, however, have added a new layer of uncertainty to an already sensitive situation.

Repeated attempts to contact Morsheda Begum have been unsuccessful. Her mobile phone numbers were found switched off, and no direct statement has been obtained from her. A relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested that there had been borrowing of money following the marriage and that communication between the couple had gradually diminished thereafter.

Officials at Fulbari Police Station stated that they were unable to fully understand An Hongwei’s initial account due to language barriers. However, based on partial communication and gestures, they believe his complaint relates to the loss of money and documents. As the matter is believed to be linked to events in the Savar area, he has been advised to approach the relevant police station there for further action.
