A mobile court in Netrokona’s Madan upazila has sentenced two alleged drug traders to six months of rigorous imprisonment along with financial penalties following a targeted anti-narcotics operation. The swift judicial action has drawn significant local attention and renewed calls for intensified efforts to combat drug-related activities in the area.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday, 15 April, in the Dasashi area under Kaitail Union of Madan upazila. The mobile court was led by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate, Bedboti Mistry, with support from members of the law enforcement agencies and officials from the Department of Narcotics Control.
The convicted individuals have been identified as Palash Mia, son of the late Abdul Hakim of Dasashi village in Kaitail Union, and Titu Mia, son of the late Abdur Rahim from Shagoli village in Kendua upazila of the same district. According to local sources and administrative information, Palash Mia had long been suspected of involvement in both the consumption and distribution of illegal drugs in the locality. Titu Mia was also reportedly linked to similar activities based on prior intelligence gathered by authorities.
Acting on confidential information, a team from the Department of Narcotics Control conducted a raid in the area on Wednesday afternoon. During the operation, both individuals were reportedly apprehended while in possession of narcotics-related materials. Authorities stated that approximately 200 grams of cannabis, along with various paraphernalia used for drug consumption, were seized from their possession at the time of arrest.
Following their detention, the accused were produced before the mobile court. Based on the evidence presented, including seized items and witness accounts, the court found them guilty under the applicable provisions of the Narcotics Control Act. Each was sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment and fined 800 Bangladeshi Taka.
Officials noted that such mobile court operations are part of an ongoing initiative to curb drug trafficking and usage at the local level. The administration emphasised that these drives will continue regularly in order to strengthen social safety and deter criminal activity.
Speaking on the matter, UNO Bedboti Mistry stated that drugs pose a serious threat to society, particularly to the younger generation. She reaffirmed the administration’s firm stance against narcotics, adding that no individual involved in drug use or trafficking would be spared in future enforcement actions.
Local residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing support for the authorities’ proactive approach. Many have also called for sustained surveillance and stricter enforcement measures to ensure that drug-related offences do not re-emerge in the area.
