A serving police constable has been detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) after the recovery of 20,000 yaba tablets during an operation in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The arrested officer, Sajib Bepari, is attached to the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn), which is assigned to duties in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. He is a resident of Dhamrai in Dhaka district.
The arrest took place on Friday evening at around 7:00 pm at the Moricha BGB check-post located under Khuniapalong Union in Ramu upazila. The operation was carried out by the Ramu Battalion of the 30th BGB.
According to BGB officials, personnel at the check-post stopped and searched Sajib Bepari during routine operational activity. During the search, authorities reportedly recovered 20,000 yaba tablets from his possession. Following the recovery, he was immediately taken into custody by the BGB team on site.
The detained constable is currently under interrogation. Law enforcement authorities have indicated that he will be handed over to the appropriate legal process, and further details will be disclosed through an official statement after the completion of procedural requirements.
Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Commanding Officer of the 30th BGB, confirmed the detention and stated that the matter is being processed in accordance with legal procedures. He added that a formal briefing would be provided once all necessary steps are completed.
Separately, Riaz Uddin Ahmed, Commanding Officer of the 8th APBn, confirmed that constable Sajib Bepari had been on leave since Thursday and had left his place of duty prior to the incident. He further stated that an internal investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances under which the constable became allegedly involved in drug-related activities. He also noted that departmental action would be taken as per existing regulations based on the findings of the inquiry.
The incident has prompted both operational and internal administrative responses from the concerned security units. However, authorities have not released additional details regarding the origin or intended destination of the seized narcotics.
